Being one hundred percent honest

I like being totally honest.

You can say I speak my mind openly, or… I am an opinionated person.

I like to be clear cut, precise, truthful.

A couple of days ago, I gave a copy of Our Daily Bread to Melvyn. Straight off the bat, I told him, “Eh, I’m trying to convert you to Christianity. Just read and think about it lah :)”

Another time last month, I wrote a Paroimia-Paroimia (a Parody of the Easter Play) with crude references to Jesus. yes, I acknowledge it might be offensive to some. I’m just surprised that certain people are so soft, tensed, and offended by certain jokes! How sensitive society has become today. Wah, like that we go to the pubs of London and Manchester, sure die lah. Our ears will bleed.

I don’t like salesman.

I like creative salesman.

What I mean is, lets say you have a broadband product. You are trying to sell me an inferior technology without YOU knowing your own product. You BS to me all the technical jargon thinking I’m an idiot who falls for numbers like 10 time faster than dialup, wide coverage, and rm 49 per month. You think I don’t know the difference between 1400 mhz and 1024 MB of memory.

That is regarding knowledge. Another thing I hate is deception.

“NO. Our Max** broadband is truly unlimited one. Use all you like!”

Right. Touch 30GB per month, you disconnect me already, even though I download legitimate content.

“I’m parking car now… 5 minutes, 5 minutes!!!”
“I’m at the roundabout now, just 5 more minutes!”

Another thing I hate is the word “BUT” after acknowledging certain things. You are pretty, but fat. You are smart, but impractical. KEEP IT TO YOUR MUTHA****ING SELF! Ok, I’m guilty of using this “but” too lah. I try to reduce now and just acknowledge that people are right, and I am NOT always right.

Things I have said before: (Honest shit)

1. You’re fat.

2. You’re depressed.

3. You’re short.

4. That’s a stupid idea.

5. No, it cannot be done.

6. No, I am right.

7. No I cannot make it to ______.

8. No I don’t have time

9. No problem (either negatively, or positively)

10. I am doing this assignment solo because you have nothing valuable to contribute.

You don’t always have to agree. But be polite! :)

UTAR Admin Spammers are STUPID!

I enquired about Masters programme in UTAR a year ago, and am in their mailing list.

Ok, firstly, its bad enough I’m receiving SPAM from you, but that I can filter and tolerate.

What I CANNOT tolerate is that you release my e-mail address to hundreds of people on the interweb. SCREW you UTAR. So in revenge, I hereby post out UTAR’s mailing list for the whole world to see.

I’m selling this list to TARGETTED SPAMMERS for RM 2 per active e-mail, I’m rich!!!!

Yes, there is a limit of 30 people (3 tables) first come first served. Please RSVP. Thanks :)

Long long Tuesday

In 10 minutes time, I got a 10-12noon class. Then, there’s Teachers Day at Taylors University College. After that its 2-4pm with RC Ho doing Internet Commerce, followed by Gomathi Part 2, with DMM lab.

Gym at 6 with Pat and Melvyn. We’re gonna do Party Jam with Luciano.

Need time off to complete two big assignments in Networking Fundamentals as well as Advertising and Promotional Management, both due very very soon. To add salt to insult on top of injury, I got Internet Commerce assignment also due Friday. But this one is much more easier cuz I only have to search for 10 journal articles from the Interweb.

Lim kit siang is on twitter @limkitsiang . Of course, you can follow me to @thepippo

Meeting with a few people regarding 2-3 web projects, not to mention, finals in 3 weeks time. Exciting times are ahead. And also a Manchester United match later tonight (or possibly Thursday morning).

Yesterday we went to Jalan Alor for some good foods. We had stingray, pork, sambal kangkung and a forth-dish. We wanted to have durian at the street corner but the uncle wanted rm 16 per kilo. The durians were small, but we reckon 2 durians would set us back for about RM 50.

I guess they gotta put that price lah. if they sell us too cheap, then the real durian-kaki would complain and wanna pay our “student rate” as well. As Donald Trump would say, “location, location, location”.

I downloaded about 700MB over 3 hours on my Maxis 3G at home. If you follow the iPhone 3G data plans, they give you only 1000 MB per MONTH for rm 150! Crazy hor? And I swallow up all of it so fast. Now, i *think* they banned me already. I can’t seem to surf the net, so I gotta rely on the school network.

Maybe later I’ll give Maxis a call.

Actually I ported over back to Digi due to the better rates. I did it last week but still no response from them. The red tape for Mobile Number portability is simply amazing, they don’t want to steal customers easily, and of course, who would wanna lose their customers to their competitors.

Wah, the Ipoh / Perak situation is crazy man. The speaker dowan to get off the Speakers seat in the Dewan. The law in favour of the opposition with our honourable leader appealing to the courts. Its chaotic.

I think its a good time to pray for political and economical stability in our nation.

No streamyx. So I guess I will have to bug them too.

Live long and prosper.

iPhone 3G Magnetometer

This is the crazy shit I was talking about. Its a new hardware called a magnetometer. It combines with GPS and Accelerometer to give you a 3D Compass. Imagine the possibilities [from Macrumors.com]

BoyGeniusReport posts a screenshot from debugging menus in the 3.0 beta firmware which seems to confirm that Apple has built-in magnetometer (digital compass) support into the operating system.

Evidence of a magnetometer was first reported in April and MacRumors has heard that the magnetometer will indeed be present in the next generation iPhone expected this summer. We previously explored what additional functionality would come with a digital compass. The possibilities were particularly intriguing:

Examples of how this could be used include pointing your iPhone’s camera at a building and the phone telling you what building it is by combining GPS, accelerometer and compass information. The iPhone could even overlay graphics and text on top of the image to provide additional information. Another application described is the ability to show information about stars and constellations simply by pointing your iPhone towards the sky.

All I can say is, WOW!

Star Trek 2009 DVDrip YWownzor kuchai torrent

Ok, I’m just bs-ing about the title hoping to get YW into trouble!

Watched Star Trek with Aidan, Pat and Lke.

It is amazing. Its safe to say it is the best movie I’ve watched for the past 12 months (I haven’t watched many, actually).

I used to be a fan of Enterprise back in those days. I’m always amazed with quantum physics, astronomy and space/time travel. Why I didn’t pursue? Because in this field, you have to be the best. Its either hero or zero, there’s no 50% P, 65%C, 75%D.

I really liked the show and recommend anyone to go to the cinema to watch it.

A busy week is finally coming to an end. This leads us to a busy weekend, filled with meetings, appointments, yum char and pool sessions. No bowling today for whatever-god-kn0ws-what reason, but thats ok.

I’ll probably spend some time to complete my semester-long-ongoing Internet commerce assignment which requires us to collect articles (since 2005) regarding the subject matter. Must be a journal. Some people found the cheat to how to Google for it. I haven’t. So I’ll spend the weekend completing that task. I will have to do my Advertising Assignment #2 also which involves creating a promotional plan for a Broadband company.

After those two assignments are settled, then its time to hit the books in preparation for the final exams in 3 weeks time.

Oh, and to my sister who is reading this, remember our lunch date on Saturday. Preferbly in 1U / Ikea / PJ / Subang area lah, so its convenient for me. Thanks a lot :) Saturday is wesak day too.

Class start in a few moments. Anyway, since moving to the new house, I do not have internet access. I dongle my HP to Maxis’ 3G network, and subscribed to the Unlimited plan for about RM 3 a day. So about 1 week downtime (Thanks to Terrorkom and TM nut) I have to fork out RM 21 just to keep connected. Oh well, it is and has been a fun experience playing with 3G.

This is REALLY a true friend [link]

Good day everyone. Live long and prosper.

Champions League Finals 2009

I woke up today to a pleasant surprise. A girl from church commented about my post and included this:

: X

AFAIK, that’s the emoticon for a kiss right? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO… I’m over the world.

Hmm, or maybe I could inteprete it wrongly. I always get wrong signals from girls. Maybe she’s sealing her mouth so tight cuz she’s disgusted at me. Or indirectly telling me, ÿou’re rubbish; thus I have nothing to say”.

Bah, I better not over-analyse. Takes too much time and as we know, time is money.

No surprise there – Barca won. But for the bookies, it wasn’t such a happy ending because the odds were even ball. By 15 May 2009, Manchester United will mathematically be the champions of England for a second successive season.

It tickles me to see great teams such as Chelsea blaming the ref for results and decisions that don’t go their way. Chelsea claims 4 penalties, despite having Barca playing with 10 men for 20+ minutes! If you’re a true winner, you would win it by a margin, no matter how close your teams are. Lets say: 3-1?

Point is, everything is a dice roll. Poker is definately depending on your luck; but the element of skill comes when you manage to disguise your hand and give your opponents the impression your hand is weak. It is not how many pots you win, it is how MUCH you win from each pot.

Lets say we have a problem

2x + 3y =14

5x + y  = 20

Average people follow instructions

The refer to a Math book, study the method, and apply it into a problem

y = 20 – 5x

2x + 3 (20  – 5x) = 14

2x – 15x + 60 = 14

13x = 46

x = 46/13

y = 20 – 5 (46/13)

Smart people use better methods to effectively solve this problem. Now, I’m no math genius, but AFAIK, simultaneous equations can be solved using a Formula x = b^2-4ac [bla bla bla]

So one shot, use calculator / MS excel, kaw tim, found answers for X and Y

Geniuses are people who come out with new methods of solving problems

You may think that existing methods are good enough for our needs. People studying University level Applied Mathematics would think it is insufficient for complex models. So they learn more advanced shit for curves and other 3-dimension equations, for example. At this level, they are forced to think of problem solving methods. We need a starting point, yes, so we refer to existing work. At some point, they would have to deduce their own methods and formulae to use.

Same with business. There are 3 ways to approach a problem.

A conventional way; an unconventional way; and a breakthrough innovative way.

They say that, “There is a solution to every problem”. Whenever we are faced with an impossible task, it is easier to give up rather than to look for a solution. In assignments, we can be feeling totally lost and confused on how to approach the task. Our mind goes *blank* and we start to panic.

Being a good team-player and leader involves the need to be calm and collected during this phase. We need to get over the initial fear of not being able to accomplish. We also need to put ideas on the table, so that our team mates can work on and improve the methods. In a good effective team, other members will debate and disagree (if necessary) on the ideas put on the table. As an individual idea contributor, you must be man enough to accept the fact that you’re NOT always right, and other peoples ideas might be better and more effective than yours. However, you can fight back and explain why your idea is better.

The above just happened in our Student Council “pre-meeting meeting”, I noticed some people were very good at debating and giving objections to ideas. I love people who presents a different point of view. But this particular person keeps throwing problems-after-problems when someone comes up with their ideas. On his own idea, he would protect it like mad, and follow-through kaw-kaw.

This person will be someone top, maybe Director of a Company, yes because of his ability to see problems and rectify it.

But to be of someone of Steve Job’s stature, you need to be open to crazy shit, putting aside perceived “practicality” and budget constrains. Come up with a big idea; let the angel investors come up with the fundings.

GREAT ideas don’t come overnight. Lets say you receive funding from a sponsor to come up with a cure for H1N1. You got a lab and equipment, you got a big intelligent team. The objective is to improve on Tamiflu to specifically target this strain of flu. You are given 72 hours, maximum 6 days to come up with results.

An average team of Scientists / Biologist will come up with some shit similar to the existing flu medicine. Improve this and there a bit, add a little salt and pepper [in Hokkien, they say : keh yam keh tau yeu] and come up with FluAway(tm).

Smart people will take ideas from other Scientists and work out new ways to make it more effective. They call it collaboration. I call it plagiarism.

Geniuses will tell the client: EH, sorry boss. I cannot deliver within your timeframe. But as soon as I come up with something, guarantee I give the rights to you cuz you funded us.

Bottom line is, as cliche (Gail for you Arsenal fans) as it sounds, we need think out of the box. Be an innovator and trendsetter, not a laggard, not a follower. IN a related issue, do not compromise your values, ethics and standards no matter what the rewards are.

God bless your weekend :) Be fruitful, cheerful and productive!

This means the latency sucks. And the max speed is about 10Kbyte/sec.. so its a bit slow.
But the good thing is I’m ONLINE! Until terror-kom come and fix my Stimix / Shitmix.
United to go through to Champion’s League Finals. :”)
Catan later lah (lukas) when my connection goes ünlimited.
I’m listening to physical CDs on a physical CD player now. I feel so old-school..

[1am update]
WOW!
My 3G / HSPDA is very weak right now, only 1 bar.
But surprisingly, that means I can connect up to 30-40KB/s. That’s crazy.
Yeah, but still latency is an issue, I’m getting about 600ms pings to common sites.

But with nice speeds, I’m enjoying every moment of my Maxis 3G experience.

Will report back tomorrow for further evaluation.

Oh, today I finished my Marketing assignment (excel). Happy everything worked out well.

[7am update]
Great Man Utd win. Fletcher got unlucky with the red card, but its all part of a bigger plan. The winner of Chelsea / Barca will have one player excluded from the finals too. Fletch can help us with our Premier League aspirations 100%.

I am super impressed with Maxis 3G. I got connected to the HSPDA (3.6mbit) but the signal only 1 bar. I expected the worst, but I manage to peak at 130Kbytes/sec (1.2 mbit) and danced around in sessions of about 100Kbytes/sec averaging about 65Kbytes/sec over 15 minutes. That can even sometimes challenge Shitmix on a good day.

Of course you can’t torrent 100% on Maxis 3G unlike Shitmix, but hey, as a temp connection, this shit is WHACK!

Keep in mind my room is super duper deep indoors, and it has to pass through many layers of wall! If got antannae at roof, sure get higher consistent speeds. I went to DiGi yesterday and played with their 3G broadband in selected areas. Wow, the speeds rox… pure 1mbit weh, and decent latency. They use 3.75G, which is even more hebat, promising a theoretical max of 14.4Mbit/sec.

Maxis great speeds
I got an old P3/500mhz rig. I plan to set it up as a private server of some sort. Will post details about this project soon.

Ronaldo PEAK
A week + ago, I was talking about “finishing strong in life”. It doesn’t matter how you messed up your life. It is all about how you finish in life. I think Pastor Daniel Ho of DUMC preached about this issue. Its funny that I cannot remember the past weeks sermon, but when put into a situation, all the things I’ve heard suddenly come back to me now.

I found this in Lowyat Forums, “How to write complain letter to Telekom Streamyx”.

Got all sort of templates for different things. They also publish email address of key people, so you get faster response. If you’re facing problems, give this a shot! [link]

Have a nice day, everyone ;)
