The Wine Industry

November 25th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

According to Wine Intelligence, UK there are 5 “Portraits” of wine drinkers.

1. At 42%, the biggest is the “Mainstream At-Homers” who spend 4-5 quid 3+ times a week. They are very sensitive to Promotions and very involved in the selection / researching of wine. Countries: France, Australia, Chile.

2. Adventurous Connoisseurs at 20% consists of regular wine drinkers (3+ occations weekly) spending top dollar 6-7 pounds. These high income bunch read upmarket newspapers and they really know their wine.

3. Sociable Promotion seekers. aka Cheapos who love wine. Highly sensitive to promotions and drinks almost every day!

4. Weekly Treaters at 18% seldom drink wine, but pay premium price. Young, single demographic.

5. Frugal Conservatives at 20% are infrequent wine drinkers, low income (poor), drinks at home alone, spends up to 4 pounds.

What I can see, is.. Mainstream at homers are the most lucrative sustaining market. 2nd choice would be Portrait 4 who do it once a week. The Adventurous dudes are hard to please cuz they really know their wine. Their top dollar is not worth it; its more like a niche.

There’s potential for Portriat 3, the drunkards who drink so often, but price would be an issue.

Here’s a Top 10 list as of 2005.

Top 3 Lager: Stella, Carling, Foster’s

Top 3 Wines: Hardys, Blossom Hill, E& J

Top 3 Fortited Wines: Harvey, Croft, Martini Extra Dry

Top 3 Ale / Stout: Guiness (duh~), John Smith, Boddington’s

Top 3 Liqueurs: Baileys, Southern Comfort, Pimms No. 1

Top 3 Champaign: Moet & Chandon (I actually tried this stuff before!), Veuve, Clicquot

Top 3 Ready-to-drink: Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi, WKD

Top 3 Cider & Perries: Strongbow, Lambrini, White Lightning

Top 3 White Spirits: Smifnoff Red Label, Gordon’s Gin, Glen’s Vodka

Top 3 Dark Spirits: Bell’s 8 Yr, The Famous Grouse, Teacher’s

22-11 Yang Wei

November 22nd, 2009  |  Published in Blog

My high school principal, Mr. Soo celebrates his birthday on 22-11-33. He was a nice man.

Then there’s YW. For the past 3-4 occasions, we have been having Carl’s Jr to commemorate each other’s birthdays.

Expensive burgers with good service… and now even playing a music mix of their own, not bad.

Yesterday visited DUMC. The youth were awesome, highly talented bunch with huge potential. Maybe one of the reasons why I insist so much on going back to Penang to work is perhaps to build up and serve in my home church. Like linkin park says, “I will never know myself until I do this on my own.. I will never feel anything else until my wound are healed”.

ywbday

Pool last night was fun. Tough luck for Birthday boy’s Arsenal team who lost to Sunderland @ the Stadium of light. Business as usual for United, still trailing Ski by 5 points and a big goal difference.

Today’s agenda, off to Lowyat. And Kin Kin pan mee. OMG, i can’t wait.

Poker King (2009)

November 20th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

Nice movie, cute Hongkie girls, and of course my favourite card game.

Finally, I watched it. And I thought it was good.. the card hands were quite predictable, nevertheless very entertaining. The made references to the World Series of Poker tournament, which I have been closely following. WSOP is the epitome of the game, kinda like Wimbledon, the World Cup or Nürburgring.

Had Bak Kut Teh at SS14. Ah Ping (Blue sign) was closed so we settled for Yu Kee (Corner Shop).

Since its Friday, I had to  have my bowling “fix”. Paid RM 12 for 3 games, and heck yes, it was WORTH IT. It feels different having to pay for bowling, you know, being spoilt with 10 game per session thanks to Taylor’s bowling club. Hahaha…

Last cell tonight. A few jokers won’t be around due to Exams and Had Yai (other “assignment”). Nevertheless, should be a fun, memorable one.

I’m looking to work in Penang. Anybody has any job openings there? I’m available IMMEDIATELY :)

Ah…. the beautiful voices of Owl City, the Postal Service and Libera are making my heart warm and fuzzy~! la la la…..

Windows 7: How is the experience?

November 18th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

It is almost a month since Windows 7 was officially released. Leaked copies of the final version has been out for over 2 months. So, how was my experience?

5 major points I’d like to make.

1. Conflicts with some programs. I had an old version of Kaspersky. It caused my installation to be extremely buggy and unusable. Credit to them though for releasing a fix within days.

2. ReadyBoost (as described earlier elsewhere) is a godsent! You’ll notice signficicant boost in general performance by plugging in a Thumb drive and dedicating it for cache disk duties. The responsiveness is just breathtaking.

3. This is truly a multitasker. Past versions prior to Win 7 had terrible multitasking performances. Run an antivirus scan and your PC is basically useless. The code has been optimised and the core handles all your requests in small threads (pretty much like Mac OS X since its inception in 7 years ago!). Microsoft has finally caught up!

4. Everything works out of the box. With a Win XP installation, you won’t have Network connection or audio for example. You need the CD to get started. Win 7 includes basic drivers to save you the headache (at least for my setup!)

5. Try this. Open all 6 programs in Microsoft Office 2003 in one go. Chances are, you’ll take 4-5 seconds. On Win 7, it takes half the time! The programs are ready to use as soon as you click on the icons.

game theory

My first test went well. I needed a miracle, and I think I got it (gotta wait til mid Dec to find out). Here is an article related to my studies which is interesting to read:

In today’s fast paced world, change is imminent. In order to gain an advantage, you gotta “change” the Players, Added Value, Rules, Tactics and Scope of the Game.

Another article worth a look is the Holy Bible translated in Lolcat language! [link here and here]

I think its an internet phenomena / meme. If you go to Youtube, you can find cats do all sorts of crazy stuff, including playing an organ! They’re so “cute and adorable” thats why any cat related jokes are damn viral!

I’m using Google Desktop and Google Chrome now. Chrome has seen much improvements. And speed wise, its the best. Every tab is a different process. This means multi-core systems will see significant boost in speed! Give Chrome a try [link]

It is a beautiful Wednesday!

Importance of exercise

November 15th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

Every morning, I make it a point to do at least 2,000 metres of walking. I walk around the SS15 Subang Area, smile at people and greet them “Good Morning!”. It is nice to see the morning buzzing activity, when shops open, mothers come out to market to buy their food, old people and their old things, and the office crowd cerita-ing about their last night happenings.

I haven’t been playing badminton or bowling for some time now. Will try to go Futsal on Monday night (hint: new shoes) and Badminton the following day. Exam period now for UniSA, so not surprising that activity has dropped a notch.

One activity I have been doing is, pool (billiards). Played with Melvyn, and Yang Wei on separate occasions. There is a competition at Asia Cafe as we speak (now, 10am) but with a Strategy exam tomorrow I can’t afford to risk it.

I must talk about the hotly contested broadband market in Malaysia. With the RM 500/year tax rebate for broadband uptake, suddenly, the telcos (Digi, Celcom, Maxis) are all hot in the game. There was a Digi promo in 1 Utama shopping complex with RM 2000 blackberries going for under Rm 500 with a RM 58 plan. Insane. Maxis also got lah, and with their iPhone monopoly, their coffers are pretty huge.

shoes

Performance on the Digi 3G internet has been satisfactory, it was awsm when it started but has been downgraded. It still has 3.5G speeds (HSDPA) but guess I’ve grown accustomed to the speedy Streamyx and Digi’s initial bursts, that the gain has been not so much, noticable. Oh yes, my Google Maps with Sat. pix loads like instantly when it usually took 10-15 secs on “traditional 3G”. To quantify it, I’d say, 80ms / 700kbit performance compared to Streamyx’s 30 ms / 1300kbit speeds.

yup, in line with tradition, I bought myself a basic Adidas the 3 stripes shoes. The old pair was size 10, now its a tighter 9. The old pair undergone some torture during Couz Camp this year at El Santuary (having to cross a knee deep stream!!)

The AirAsia free tickets thing was huge. Servers crawled to standstill. I think they’ll be hiring Database optimisers to better handle the occasional surge in traffic. I didn’t get any, don’t want to make too much advanced plans. My exams end 26th November 2009 and I really want to start working immediately. Will get the “letters” out ASAP, God willing, I will get that dream job in Penang :)

I hear there’s a blogging competition thing at Pavillion. @radianceleong was spamming on Twitter to garner support. Of course her man won! Imagine locked in a cage / aquarium in a busy shopping mall  and all you do is to blog about it! Fun PR exercise, I must say.

Seems that November onwards is a busy period for PR / Advertising / Promotional activities. I think since a company accumulate so much profits, might as well use ‘em up to avoid tax. I think I need to come up with a product that these rich mid 20s to early 40s need. Bonus = money = profits for any business!

Listening to SIB KL’s Breathtaking album. I got a 3.5mm audio adapter, and a Y-cable (Red-white) to 3.5mm… so technically I can play these songs on the Club 9 audio system (lol…) I notice that the audio is out of sync in some parts, the vocals are too fast. I guess they were rushing for the deadline (15th Aniversary). Its a shame, because the instruments were awesome.

Melvyn will be going back Singapore soon. He has his contact and will probably start work immediately if he chooses to. Kathryn seems to be having fun at KC. And Lukas is with Mattel. Maybe first half of 2010, I’ll lay the groundworks for Phailed Networks Sdn Bhd.. or something Phailed! Sell computer parts, services, give business advise, internet service and troubleshooting, trend analysis, ADVERTISING & PROMOTION, mmm.. endless possibilities!!!

Stay tuned.

Yang Wei’s birthday this Saturday? Will go for Thai food? Carl’s might not be nice anymore.

There’s this thing about indecisiveness which I find interesting. When choosing which restaurants to go to, people (girls especially) would say “no, no no” to almost everything, but they don’t have any good suggestions of where to go! It has been concluded that:

“They don’t know where they want to go, but they know where they DON’T want to go!”

Same with almost every other decisions they make, right?? :)

2012

The movie didn’t disappoint. Highly anticipated, awsm graphics, Russian humor.. what a great mix!

Now I am happy!

Imagine, paying € 1 billion (because USD would be worth-less now) per person for a ticket on a ship, an ark (like Noah in the bible).

Its been a hectic week. Was shooting video in and around KL. Met very interesting personalities and a few friends. The experience has been Breathtaking!

The big exam is on Monday. Gotta prep some essays and i think i need 20 / 35 marks to pass the subject. Phew.

In other news its FRIDAY the 13th!!!!

Jangling dischords

November 8th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

On Saturday I attended the Youth Congress 2009 held at Taylors University College organised by the Rotaract Club (Wai Cheng). We got high profile speakers like the Vinod rubber guy, Niki Cheong and Roshan (Leaderonomics). Very inspirational people.

Throughout the talk there were names like Steve Jobs, Hitler and Martin Luther King thrown around frequently. The theme was “Change” and that day I learnt a lot.

One Dance song (clubbing dance, not numa-numa dance) that I had a flashback of, was the one my Russian Dance group, PPK… “I have a Dream” [Youtube] with a sample of Martin Luther King’s speech.

“I’m not afraid of the guy with the big fists, the big brains, the big attitude, the big wallet, the big mouth, the sharp tongue. No, not at all. But I’m afraid of the guy who can influence people, who motivates the brains, who spurrs up the tough nut and who moves an army willing to sacrifice their lives for a cause. The person to be afraid of is the influencing people.
