LED Lighting indicating phone activity

by Philip Khor on July 4th, 2009

Here’s my idea worth sharing for this week.

ledroom

LED Lights have been used widely for many applications. In interior design, this form of light is prominent in modern design to give a room a futuristic ambiance.

If you have a mobile phone, you are probably used to the interference it can cause to computer speakers whenever a Text Message or a Phone Call comes in. Upon careful observation, the pulsating sounds on the speaker varies, depending on whether you have an SMS or a phone call.

My idea is to have LED lights connected to a simple frequency detector chip / box. The room will turn flashing Yellow when there is a Text message and flashing Blue when there’s a phone call.

One of the cool effect you’ll get is, that the room will change colours even before the phone rings as the signals give a 2-3 second warning before the phone beeps!

If there are 3-4 simultaneous signals coming in at a same time, the two colours will start flashing followed by a third colour which indicates high activity.

The application for this device would be for Classrooms to be SMS / Phone interference free. No longer can students send SMSes under their teachers’ nose.

In hospitals and operation theatres, the security personnel can quickly identify “hot zones” and escort the offenders outside accordingly.

In lecture halls / convention centres when a Speaker is giving his keynote speech, we can identify who is busy text-ing.

Likewise in Cinemas, the person who is disrupting the movie will have his seat lit up like a Christmas tree, where others can throw popcorn at him.

The chips are already there. The only thing needed is to make the sensor directional and sensitive to target the right areas. Also, interior designers and building planners need to integrate beautiful looking LEDs capable of different colours into their designs.

It would be a fun to have lights blinking randomly and in different intensity / colours in a room. Now you’ll know when your partner is tweeting about how bad you are in bed.
