My predictions.

A. Dell’s 8″ tablet PC with 4G by P1 Wimax.

B. MiFi on 4G, create a wifi hotspot on the go! (Just like Sprint in America)

Allow me to enlighten you on the “State of Wireless Broadband in Malaysia”.

The 2 popular telco amongst the lucrative 18-28 year old market is DiGi and Maxis. Both of them have the phones that this age group desire. No, not the HTC Desire (ahem @debbehwoo) but the iPhone.

Industry analysts use this metric, the ARPM (Average Revenue per Minute) or Per Subscriber as a benchmark on how well the company is doing. Generally, higher is better.

A typical smartphone user’s monthly phone bill is in the range of RM 120-150. Non-smartphone users on Prepaid plans pay anywhere from RM 20-50 per month. See the huge gap?

In terms of both calls and SMS, both sets of users typically use around the same amount (Surprise, surprise!) So that means, Postpaid “smartphone” users are being raped by their telcos (or tied to long 2 year commitment contracts) for the liberty to tweet and Facebook everywhere they go.

This is where I can see P1 Wimax coming in. They will be offering a Mifi device. It creates a virtual Wifi hotspot with a 2-5 meter range (so others can’t sniff your wifi) for up to 5 users and you get connected to the net via the P1 network. Now they have got “presence” in many coffee shops, so if REAL wifi is available, subscribers to this service would get instant access.

When you’re on the road or when there’s no Free Wifi, you can pull out your battery operated MiFi device (that lasts 5 hours), and boom, you’re online.

Price point: RM 99 for 10GB transfers, I would say. Those devices aren’t cheap, so some form of commitment is required. And I feel a 12-18 month subsidised plan will entice users. (Remember the Malaysian government RM 500/year broadband initiative?)
