Yes 4G test in RURAL Penang (screenshots)

Disclaimer: Yes, I was on a sponsored YES 4G bloggers trip ages ago. But ever since then, I have been paying for every single MB of my bandwidth – bill has come to about RM 1000+ paid over the past 6+ months. I am happy and satisfied with Yes 4G services by YTL Comms.

23/02/2012 edit: These note have been reviewed and new amendments are available below. This pertains to actual downloaded content from YouTube as measured by Connection via Unifi. To understand the situation, read the below post as is, after that then only read the amendment at the bottom.

Amazing.

Here goes.

The test is to load Coldplay’s music video on Vevo at their highest settings 1080p. Link to Video.

Some Statistics of Usage

Some Statistics of Usage

The whole experience took 13 minutes, not quite FULL HD video streaming. But remember, even UniFi 5mbps cannot handle 1080p streaming. This is just a speedtest for Yes 4G and bearing in mind the signal level at my village is 1 / 5 bars of Signal! probably catching to the towers from Lunas, Kedah.

Very pleasurable experience once the whole file is buffered into my Firefox browser and put on replay.

Summary:

1. Data usage: 443 MB for a 5 minute 1080p video (translation: RM 13.30 in cost ~ yeowch)

2. Quality: EXCELLENT. Remember I have only 1/5 bars on my Yes Zoom Gateway which is connected via 100 mbps Ethernet cable to my old desktop computer hooked to the HDTV.

3. Max speed (according to DU Meter) It recorded a sustained 1 MB/s (8,000 kbps max) for a short burst. Overall, as seen in the above screenshot, my speeds were averaging 600 KB/s (4,800 kbps) for the whole of the 13 minute download test.

Conclusion:

1. Yes 4G is good at 1/5 bar, imagine what it can do at 3/5 bar or 4/5 bar. I bet it can do 10 mbps Download easily. Mind you, that is Unifi 10 mbps territory with their 2 year service contract and RM 199 / month fees.

2. Pay as you go is painful, but valuepack will shave half the cost. Since I’m on Valuepack 150, the price I paid for the above test is half (RM 7 there abouts).

3. Yes 4G Coverage is amazing. On North South Highway on the way to Bukit Mertajam, I got 85% coverage. Which means I can surf Youtube for 85% of the journey. There are some blind spots where it was blinking red. But it could just be handing over to another tower as I speed at 120 km/h.

4. For comparison, Digi 3G on my iPhone gave me 20-30% coverage (For EDGE / 3G and above). This is unacceptable as most of the time I don’t have net access on the North South Expressway. Further more, Digi 3G has a max of 0.7 mbps vs Yes 4G’s real-world 6-8 mbps!

5. No contract, just pay as you use. That’s why I like Yes 4G.

Amendment as of 23/2/2012: I ran the test on Unifi and was surprised Unifi 5 mbps allowed 1080p streaming with ZERO lag and buffer. I look at the data rate graph and statistics, here is what I observed.

So in short, yes it is possible to stream 1080p, but be warned about the Youtube system requirements. Since this is HTML 5 (not Flash), the requirements can be met by most computers. But my kampung one is a little slow / old.

IN Essence, based on my latest observations, Yes 4G will be able to handle the data rate requirements to stream 1080p YouTube to my kampung houise. No problem at all. The computer, display and hardware on your end must be sufficient to support 1080p playback. As for 720p, it would take roughly 1/2 the data transfers, so both providers will be able to handle it comfortably.

Comparing Apples to Apple (since Yes 4G is a wireless broadband product), there is none like their service. Very stable, wide coverage, very consistent.
