My take on the subjects
C10028 Bachelor of Business (Complete)
Major in Information Technology
I have been a computer geek since young. I spent at least 50 hours a week on the computer at a tender age of 9. Started of with a Power Mac G3/233Mhz, and went through at least 6 systems so far. Naturally, I would like that head knowledge to be put on paper.
Major in Marketing
I took Marketing as a result of circumstances. I failed “The Financial System” and “Macroeconomics”. It was a rough period of my life where things were blur and directionless. Thank God I made it through. And it was really a blessing in disguise. Marketing is my passion. I like essays, reports and research. I like to observe and reason. I like to be able to explain things and phenomena happening around me. Marketing was a jackpot for me.
Year 3 – UniSA subjects
24430 Applied Project (IMT, Strategy)
My favourite subject. It focused majorly on running a car company in a simulated game. My team was first place, but the report was lacking. In terms of profit, consumer rating and key barometers, we were TOP!! wootzah~!
24415 Marketing Planning and Strategy (BMPP)
The theoretical part for IMT. It is a University of South Australia subject. And this was boring. Yet I took a few good views on how to strategise from the prescribed text. Nais.
Year 1 – Sem 1
22107 Accounting for Business
Basic accounting. Got help from Shamla / Joan who went to UTS Australia on year 2.
25115 Economics for Business
Confusing subject for me at that time. But if there was one subject I would wanna retake now, it would be Economics based. I think it should be a 2nd year subject lah~!
21129 Managing People and Organisations
Very understanding lecturer who taught me how to view things differently and from different POV. My favourite line I learn from her, “yes… i understand your POV. how about looking at it another way…”
24108 Marketing Foundations
Very theoretical knowledge. One major thing i learn is how to complete essays and reports. The need for referencing and citations in footnote. Keeping my ideas organised proof to be a challenge.
Year 1 – Sem 2
22207 Accounting Transactions and Business Decisions
Advanced accounting. It would be easy for those who took Pre-U accounting, but I didn’t. Again, got some help =)
79203 Business Law and Ethics
The role playing tutorial classes were awesome. I’m guessing it would be like the Law Degree’s moot court setting but in a business environment. How to look out for clauses in contracts. And how to identify who is at fault and cover your own asses.
26134 Business Statistics
Excel ftw.
Had first big argument / complaint with the lecturer. Who turns out to be super nice once you get to know him. Just a minor clash of personalities lah.
25300 Fundamentals of Business Finance
Good stories by this American educated lecturer. Fun times, relaxed atmosphere, no pressure. The other subjects has really been pushing us, so it was a welcomed situation.
Year 2 – Sem 1
25555 Macroeconomics: Theory and Applications
FAILED. The graphs got me on the first lecture. When I don’t understand the table of contents, I won’t understand nuts.
31508 Programming Fundamentals
Karate application. We developed our FIRST program. Just copy paste the code. Mind you, copy pasting code is not as easy as we learn about Variables and loops. Final assignment answers were available at the back of the textbook! But we had to stay up sleepless night trying how to configure the cashier system! lol, good times.
31424 Systems Modelling
Flowcharts and Data flow diagrams. A systematic way of organising our business processes. Final exam was like kindergarden art class. I’m serious!
25556 The Financial System (Basic Finance paper)
FAILED. Don’t wanna talk about it! Ask @melvynwee @lukasfoo @jmhartojo
Year 2 – Sem 2
Took a break
Year 3 – Sem 1
24205 Business Marketing
Not too bad. Throughout the semester we were reminded not to think of consumer marketing. It really brings a different perspective on how businesses deal with each other. The importance of relationship and good customer service.
31509 Computer Fundamentals
Yup, real Fundamentals taken from a 1990 textbook (8 bits = 1 byte, 01100001 = 97, 1 + 1 = 1, etc! naan gate, cheese naan and nand!)
24202 Consumer Behaviour
A psychology paper. Very useful. Worth re-reading the lecture notes / book. Helps you plan your strategies in Marketing
31060 Information Systems Principles
Group work. Working with nice people accomplishing basic tasks. Did some presentation as well.
Year 3 – Sem 2
31061 Database Principles
Microsoft Access. I was the most helpful student in class. First 4-5 tutorials, I was the master of the subject. Creating tables, forms, SQL queries, it was really fun for me. Ended up with Credit only, tho.
24220 International Marketing
Project: Bring a local franchise overseas. We did Old Town Kopitiam to Thailand (I think they followed our suggestion). ok, we can’t claim credit for this. But it is fun to google up what is happening in Thailand, the laws, the environment, political situation, profitability, problems faced when operating there, away from home. etc.
24309 Introductory Marketing Research
Two types: Quantitative, Qualitative. When conducting a survey you gotta be careful not to lead the respondants into answering that answer YOU want. A suggestive interviewer = phail. Questions must be sequential and follow the flow. Online poll tip. If you got 50 questions, to make sure people are not cheating, in question 40, write “Select B as the correct answer”. So that way you have a gauge for people who randomly click nia lah.
Year 4 – Sem 1
31950 Networked Enterprise Design
My only Distinction. And I still don’t know what we did there. We had lots of fun, that’s for sure.
24210 Advertising and Promotions Management
Advertising is my passion. It involves being creative, so, it really caught my attention. I have been exposed to Graphics Design and advertising since 9. What makes people attracted to your product, highly depends on how much you spend on advertising.
I made a bold prediction: By 2015, the “Top 10 universities” in the world (and in Malaysia) would be the ones who spend the most in Advertising.
Meaning, if Taylor’s decided to pump in the MILLIONS of ringgit per year in Advertising expenditure, it will be “perceived” as the number 1 in a random student survey.
24331 Decision Models in Marketing
More Excel. This time more advanced statistical functions.
31749 Internet Commerce
Collecting articles on Internet Commerce. We see from past to present, the changes in carrying business online.
That’s about it. Overall, I give Taylor’s University College, Malaysia :
95/100 rating in terms of quality of education and lecturers.
88/100 rating in terms of facilities (or lack of) Free bowling & badminton is nice, thank you very much!
90/100 rating in terms of environment and student population
BUT sidenote, it seems that the “environment” to me, is not there anymore RIGHT NOW cuz of their transfer to the Lakeside, and an influx of new students. If that rating was to be taken today, I’d say ” 50/ 100 ” .. sorry for being brutal.
