Church sermon notes: Humility

May 7th, 2011  |  Published in Blog

Dr Tan Siang Yang, now an American Citizen came for the weekend to a series of sermon on leadership and servanthood.

Disclaimer: These notes are summarised. I encourage you to get the sermon CDs from DUMC.

1. Importance of washing feet

All of us called to be servants. Jesus’ call to servanthood. Comparison of true service vs self righteous service.

Characteristics of true service

Comes from the personal relationship with Jesus
Impossible to distinguish the small from the large service.
When doing something don’t boast about it
Free of the need to calculate results
Does not discriminate one among another –
Ministers simply — where there is a need, you fulfill it.
A lifestyle — something that comes naturally.
Q: What if god moved you to another ministry when you start to become comfortable with the ministry you are serving now? Will you obey?

Examples of self-righteous service

Involves human effort much planning and programming with no prayer. Please don’t misunderstand, planning is good. But let God be the focus.
It is ego focused. My team, my ministry, my group, I did it, I pulled together a team. Me, myself, I! Egoistical.
Requires external rewards.
Concerned with results and KPI (key performance index).
Pick and choose who to serve according to our whims and fancy.
Affected by mood and feelings.

Pride is exalting ourselves
Phillipians 2:3: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit
James: Church don’t depend on leaders but rather servants
1 Peter 5 — God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

7 deadly sins — the root of all evil

We are born sinful, we cannot help it. Only the holy spirit can help us with our sinful nature. Servanthood does not cause suffering — often we ask God why does this happen to me?

Philippians 3: God’s desire is we come back to Him.

To be transformed is to hang out with Jesus. God wants something better for you. Encourage to think back, reflect and see what’s wrong — are we not spending enough time with God?

Heres the original post on the sermon on HUMILITY:

Matt 23:12: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted”.

Whoever exalted self will be humbled
Whoever humble self will be exalted
Paradoxial, huh? ;-)

Pride is obsession with self.

John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit”.

Mega church has potentially liabilities. The church is an Organism consisting of many human beings.

Running church must not be CEO model, where performance is measured in profits, KPI, efficiency, turnover, attendance numbers. NO NO!

It must instead be shepherd model, must be personal.

1 Corinth : God adds the numbers, not us.
John 15 talks about abiding in Jesus.

Prayer meetings are the greatest place of…
“pray for me as I go to mission trip” under the disguise of seeking prayer , different actual intentions. We have to be careful on how we “show off”. We might think our intentions are good, but just beware.

Be careful how you share your sinful pride.

Value anonymity secrecy

We try too hard to get noticed to get people to know the great things we have done. Impression management massaging our image. I find this true to myself. That’s why I tweet, facebook, foursquare, youtube and share everything about myself so that the world will validate me. How amazing the timeliness of this sermon! I seem so insecure with myself that I need validation from the masses. If no one notices it, then I wouldn’t be the talk of town, right? Become aware of people and their frantic efforts to advertise and certify themselves.

Tip on how we can improve: Look for one substantive service you can do . Do without telling anyone!!!

Defense and judgementalism. Often times we are judgemental. It’s easy to critise. It is our defense mechanism before others start critisizing us! Yeah, I really wanna change myself in this respect.

Hoping for good things towards your colleagues so that they can even exceed you .. Sounds impossible? I mean, we wish everyone well, but to wish for others to be better than us… that is a big ask. But that has to be done.

Br faithful til the end 1 Cor 10: Warnings from Israel’s History.

Really good read. I just realised the end of the bible is very interesting, some things I haven’t yet read before. Sure we have read the gospel stories plentiful times. But past Acts and Romans, there are plentiful WISDOM!

Run, but don’t run for all these non sense! We often are told to “run the race”. I didn’t catch what the preacher was trying to say, but will get back to you when I hear the CD.

Green bay packer’s boss: Winning is not everything; winning is the only thing. Individualism and egoism very apparent and obvious.

Competition is based on pride. We should have humility and pray for others to succeed more than ourselves .

Newsweek article: Fools gold. Does it gain a country when they host the Olympics? What race are we running?

Best description of church: the special Olympics.

Kindly rate / comment / give additional feedback if any.

Sarawak 10th State Elections 16 April 2011

“If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Polling day is this SATURDAY, 16th April 2011. There are 31 Parliamentary seats, 71 State seats in Sarawak. Let us stand together with our Sarawakian brethren in prayer as they face their state elections. Pray:

1. Give thanks to God for His love for Sarawak; for blessing us with abundance of resources, no natural disasters, peace and harmony amongst people of many races and religions.

2. For a peaceful, free and fair election, with good weather, good voter turnout. Pray for leaders who are capable, God-fearing, full of integrity and hate dishonest gain.

3. Pray the new Government will love and take care of the people, especially the poor, needy and marginalised.

4. For the people of Sarawak that they will be good and responsible citizens, law abiding and respectful of the government, will love one another and live in peace and harmony.

5. For revival in Sarawak, that there will be a GREAT SPIRITUAL AWAKENING amongst the churches to bring her people to know God in a greater measure, to be the salt and light and be a blessing to the community.

Free this Friday night (15 April 2011)? Come for overnight prayer, “Rock 4 Sarawak” starting 11:00pm all the way til dawn at Dream Center, Rooms 101 and 102. Map directions to DUMC Dream Center. (2 Jalan 13/1, Seksyen 13, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor – 03 79587388 Twitter @DumcMy)

“Rock” here refers to:

1. Christ our Rock (and so, a call for God to visit Sarawak again)

2. A shaking movement (meaning we “rock” the doors of heaven for justice and righteousness in Sarawak, much like the widow of Luke 18)

3. A standing in solidarity as one people in worship and prayer.

Also, for General Elections (GE 13) which must be held by 2013 (at the latest).

Pray:

1. For Malaysians who are eligible to vote (21 years and above) will not miss the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. To check your status of eligibility, visit spr.gov.my website and enter your IC number.

2. The Election Commission will oversee the process with fairness and neutrality in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

3. Candidates will be of good character.

4. Divine intervention throughout the electoral process against all forms of corruption and evil plots that seek to  misinform the rakyat and manipulate the results.

5. Malaysians will exercise wisdom and discernment in voting for their representatives at state and federal levels.

September Has Ended

September 29th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

The song: “Wake me up when September end” is seasonal.

Year after year, it never goes old, just like “Unchained melody” and all those elevator music we can’t seem to get enough of!

WORK

Since last Friday, work has been quite nagging…

Came to office Saturday night after the Chelsea game. Sunday morning dropped in as well. Monday stayed til 8pm (for someone who walks off 5:30, this is unusual, hee hee…) Tuesday, also until about that time.

The Adrenaline is quite a good rush for me. I like!

Had to edit 4 interviews and put together a 30 minute show. Made one or two “boo-boos”, fingers crossed that the upload is successful! Shipping a 2.05GB file ain’t that easy. Most upload services max out at 2GB. There’s a good reason for that. Apparently web browsers can’t handle such large requests. Perhaps it’s a HTTP limitation. (Http = protocol = rules = needed for every platform to play well together)

MULTIPLICATION

SS22 PJ Gilbert’s Cell is about to Multiply.

No name calling, this time ;)

I will be under Eileen’s new cell which will be held in teh same location. Good lah, so no need to worry about transport issues. New cell mates have been decided (via Twitpic) Tonight will be makan session, attended by possibly up to 40 people from the ex-cell!

MAN UNITED

Off to Valencia for an European night.

Missing some key personnel. But we should pull through. The Spanish side now tops the league, ahead of Barca and Real Madrid!

WILD WEEKEND

Serving in Dew Crew (on Camera 3) this weekend. It’s Prayer Conference weekend. Definitely need some prayer myself! Also whenever possible, I need to find time to unwind from the demanding jobs lately. Phew. =)

Good times.

First try shooting video

August 15th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Four weeks of dew crew training / probation had led to this weekend’s occasion!

It started off with Thursday night with the rehearsals. It is usually a relaxing and slumber night of testing the equipment; figuring out how things will work. The musicians, dancers and DEW crew (a/v production crew) have a short time of devotion and ice breaker, then we head off to our respective stations. A lot of things are happening simultaneously to make the DUMC experience what it is. The stage sound guys will run through the long and tedious process of mic checking and testing the musical instruments levels. There’s a separate mix of output for the worship leader, the backup singers and the instruments. There’s this cool box that allows you to listen to an individual track, inputted via Ethernet cable (the same stuff that connects your PC to your wired broadband) You can reverse engineer it to listen to two or more tracks to get past the “1-track limitation”, but I won’t tell you how!

As for the video guys, instructions are fed through a headset connected to the camera. We are shooting on standard definition broadcast quality, essentially TV1, TV3 digital quality lah! The zoom is amazing, whilst the cameras rest on a podium (mini stage). The 4 cameras are assigned numbers and roles. Cam 1 and the left camera, giving a side profile of the stage. It is used for artistic purposes. During worship, there will be shots of the ceiling lights (down lights) then the Video Mixer will merge with a close up of the worship leader. It is used in transitions as well, from the center cameras (cam 2 and cam 3) during the sermon. On the stage running with a portable camera is Cam 4. Also used for artistic purposes, getting shots of the bass, guitars, drummers up close is a very very challenging job. A big angry gorilla like me kenot be trusted with the Cam 4 role! We try to be as discreet as possible.

First floor is the Front of House. They take care of the sound requirements of the entire auditorium (by no means an easy job!). It is also the loudest part of the auditorium because the center speakers are directly blasting out loud at over 90 dbi (i s’pose that’s loud?) During the probation, we get to experience the different sounds at different parts of the hall. There are some sweet spots, loud spots, and blind spots. It is particularly challenging for the FOS people because the elderly members like it soft, while the younger generation like it max max volume. Then you have to take account of the kids, and the amount of people filled in the 2500 capacity auditorium. It sounds different all the time. Therefore soundcheck Thursday is very vital!

Second floor is the Video room. There are 2 PCs for visual aids, a Video mixer, Person-In-Charge, and recording equipment that we record the sermon for sale, and the whole celebration on DVD for internal uses only. The racks of equipment for the camera controls are also located here. Once the mixer is happy with the output, the Powerpoint PC will overlay graphics and slides before the final output gets to the 3 big projectors. Projector control is via a Linux box with a simple interface. It controls the house lights by clusters and sections. Oh, there’s an artistic lighting on First floor which give you floral patterns, strobe lights, and the many colours. Now that box runs on Windows XP (haha). Lots of Maths x,y coordinates and % intensity figures flash out whenever a preset is selected. It has 18 banks of presets, and it is quite a joy to watch the lighting guy play the switch board.

Sometimes Thursday practise ends 10:30pm, sometimes later.

Saturday 5pm worship was better of the two. I was totally new to the camera controls and tripod tightness, it was quite a nightmare. But we made it throught.

Sunday 10am, it was very challenging. Worship, it’s easy because there are 3 other cameras to choose from. The Cam 4 stage roaming cam is the one who gets most air time. It was pretty decent overall. But when it comes to sermon time, all pressure on Cam 2 and Cam 3 (which I was on). Cam 1 is there to help out during transitions. I didn’t lock it tight enough. But although some other videographers recommended NOT to lock it 100%, I didn’t really have experience on what to do. Furthermore the Cam 3 was a bit challenging itself; because the knobs react differently. In the end, Emily (the supervisor) had to adjust for me. Still, my hands were not stable. The words “not stable” is still ringing in my head, after being repeatedly told of my shaky shots.

I tried not to be disheartened. Although very shy and embarrassed, I will pick myself up and get ready for the next challenge in early September! Thank you to my fellow crew-mates for being patient with my noobness. And thanks for the advice. Will perform better next time!

District 9 iSlate (Magic Slate)

December 27th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

3 things I wanna update you guys:

1. I had an awesome time with my family in Melaka. Met some beauty peagants from many countries around the world. Finland and Indonesia smiled at me!!! :) England and Wales were tougher to get (their attention). They were all freakin’ tall weh~!! Went to Eye on Malaysia and Melaka River cruise. Used coastal road to Port Dickson, but had to make 100 km detour back to the Highway due to heavy traffic to PD. The hotel was nice (Bayview Hotel) and the Chicken Ball Rice was just a gimmick.. something like.. the new mobile phones nowadays. We know those sneaky Marketers are getting paid overtime, and we laugh about it, but still we want it!

2. The new Apple tablet on January 27th? iSlate or Magic Slate (source: MacRumors) Save up US$700 (RM 2800?) The new multi-touch gestures will surprise you! Remember the awe we were all in back in January 2007 during the iPhone announcement? Expect similar jaw-dropping salivation this January (cough, graduation gift?) – watch District 9 [1 h 40] min when the alien prawns configure the computer to go home, yeeah.. that’s coming SOON :)

3. Christmas church was good (DULC) new year’s eve Thursday 6pm, we see you all at DUMC? Ok?
