Where were you in 1999?

June 9th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

Here I was:

Form 1G

credits: Johanna Liew

Form 1G / 1999 was one of those crazy years. We spent 75% of the year skipping class for the SEA Games held in Brunei. I think this SEA Games experience was very pivotal in the moulding of my life, it truly is! I was the bee in one of the opening/closing dance.

Lets start from front row: We’ve got Fathima, Effa, and GODZILLA (good times…), Dee Kay Hafizah, and of course, Rachel Ong. We’re led by Mrs. Lily Tan, my dad’s uni coursemate’s wife from Muar! And next to her is of course, yours truly. Next to me is Aizul.. the dude who intro-ed me Eminem and Manchester United (ah, roughly this time as well!) then its Julian Tan (Doctor at Monash?), Randy Lim (pro photographer in Canada limages.ca) and lastly Leosofie.

Middle row sees Jared, Joshua Lew (Tifosi from BACK THEN, true fan), Hamzah (the only smoker in lower Secondary.. hes the TREND setter!!!), Salam (ustaz’s son) Johanna (pic uploader, close friend), Audrey (Hakkinen, Mc Laren fan! Very calm person, mum makes nice moon cakes), Yeh Sie (doing well in the UK), Suzanne (dentist in India), Junie (just reconnected recently, also in UK), Eve Lim, Muizzah and Alice Chai (super duper smart girl).

Back row we have Zamali, Chen Ee Loong who really know how to tackle the ladies back then in familiar interesting ways, Aziman (the Yap equivalent, funny humor guy). then its John Gatchalian, the Pinoy from Manila… bebot bebot!!! The tall dude is Jonathan Chen, Bomfunk MC FREESTYLER! FTW, next is his sidekick Nicholas Lim KHAI wei very open about his sexual fantasies and adventures, then its Arifin whose mum makes the BEST speghetti ever.. very very nice. In form 3, when he decided his future path to join the millitary, he told us, “You know counter-strike.. where you go shoot people. Yeah, I will be shooting people in real life!”. I think we watched Season 7 of Friends together at a party at his house. Whoa.. good times. Far right is Chee Peng (?) Not sure.. too blurry.

One person missing that day was Adeline Chong.

This class for 1G/1999 was an interesting period. We just got the internet.. and.. IRC and stuff. We created the IRC channel on Undernet, #2g2k and #3g2k1 … but #2g2k was the more popular one lah. We had computer studies back then… we were learning Windows 95 and how to use basics stuff. Well, its better than Accounting right? So what would you have chosen?

Ok, that’s about it. Will talk about my Form 4 / Form 5 years when the time comes :)

xoxo.

Nice Christian Girls

June 9th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

Whoa… Facebook REALLY know my needs. Guess what I found while browsing some pictures!!!!

Hmmm

I tried Facebook Ads before. They were SUPER strict while selecting and approving advertisements. I guess these dating sites were paying a premium. I keep advocating for businesses to advertise on Facebook. Its like US$0.15 per 1000 impressions… like to get the same effect on newspaper, you’ll be paying US$40 per 1000? Yeah, that’s how cheap FB is. And it is TARGETED.

Bottom line is, yeah, I know and HOPE you Christian girls are like her ;) *wink*

New apple iPhones VERY SOON.

But definately new Macbooks, cheaper, better, faster, stronger.

Had a good time with Melvyn, Yang Wei and Patrick at Club 9. Wasted 5 hours of our lives (and wads of cash) waiting for the lucky draw. We humans need hope. The little hope that we might win the Toshiba Laptop and 32″ LCD tv was good enough for us to stick around, despite being tired.

Learnt shitloads in marketing and business and psychological terms from yesterday’s experience!

The “Love Pie”

June 7th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

I believe in the idea of a “love pie”. Basically, its a virtual, imaginary “quota” of love you have in your life. I know some may disagree and say that the more you love, the more love there is in the world. They think it is a cheap commodity that must be shared to everyone, so that, other people too who is being loved will in turn be more “loving people”. In the end, the world would be a better place.

Personally, I feel there’s a quota. Yes, I think that love is a free flowing thing, kinda like water. But at the same time, to me it is as valuable as oil. On top of that, we have a quota. My initial model is that it is a one off, lifelong quota. But upon reflection and fine tuning of this idea, I think its more of a “yearly” quota, which a divine power will restore you with on your birthday every year. Actually, the term 1 year is very significant. Every 365 1/4 days, the Earth make one circle around the sun, travels hundreds of millions of miles (that’s 8 trailing zeroes) in seemingly endless “ether”.

Its like this, say on October 21st, you get your quota. 100 units for example, to be used on anyone you come in contact with on the year. I’m zooming in on the one-on-one sort of friendship relationships, whether same sex, or otherwise. So if you’re giving a speech to an audience of 1000 people,  you’re not really SHOWERING everyone will love, per se, as per this model. It is more of a individual thing. I believe love is a constant if all else equal, but you can “tambah” if you feel obliged or prompted to. Lets say I have 3 friends only. In this case, the slice of pie is very huge!

A – 20 units. B – 70 units C – 10 units

Because perception varies from people to people, the 70 units you “show” to B, might be perceived as only 10 units received. B might not value the love you show, but guess what, you’ve “used up” your quota on B.

On the other hand, you invested only 10 units on C. On the other hand, C might interpret it as 50 units, yielding P/E ratio of 5:1 (Finance students correct me, Finance bo gia A1!) Imagine the possibilities if you just double up your effort, and C would get the full 100 units of love. I am currently studying whether the relationship between love given and love perceived is linear, co-linear or it follows the Power Log.

One of the factors or possible application of this model is, your Facebook friends. I have only 120 friends, so my 100 units of “love quota” per year has to be shared among my active friends. For friends I haven’t seen in the past 6 months, you would only have 0.002 units of my quota each, for example. For friends on a more regular basis, the score is about 2-3 units. If its a “close friend”, then maybe 10-15 units. Remember, this quota is shared. In this case, we exclude the love for divine powers, as practised by some religions. I think we can exclude family members and immediate relatives in this model because we focus more on our love for friends.

This model breaks down on the recipients end, because I have not yet determined how much love you can handle. Should I give it a 100 unit scale, or, should it be a percentage scale of the love you give?

Say for example, C is a very sadist person, and has only given out 10 units of love to a different person D. Now, you gave C only 10 units, but C  perceives it as 50 units. That is how much you are worth to C. The adjusted relative score (or Z-Score, alpha) would be 50 over 10, in this case 5. My model stipulates a scale

0 < Z < 0.5 Go see psychologist!

0.5 < Z < 2 You need to love more

2 < Z < 10 Good job, you’re a lovely person

Z > 10 Go see psychiatrist!

I like to call this scale, the Felicia Score in memory of this girl I knew :P

Another score worth tabulating is the Pippo Score. Taking the same case with our fictional “C”, I give 10 units, C perceives it as 50 units, but only gives out 10 units.

Say, C now gives out 30 units to E. The dynamics has shifted more towards E. The Pippo Score gives a more accurate picture of the whole situation relative to the new variable that has entered the equation.

You -> C = 10 units

C <0— You = 50 units

C —-> E = 30 units

My quota left: 0

C quota left: 60 units (used 40)

Felicia score = 50 / 10 = 5

Pippo score = (50 / 10 ) / 40 = 0.8

Lets say C uses all 100 units of love, the Pippo score (awarded to the subject would be)

Pippo score assuming C uses 100 units of love = (50 / 10) / 100 = 0.05

For the Pippo score, it doesn’t really say much about what type of person you are. It is just a method of evaluating your investment, whether your priorities are right.

In future more complex models, I would adjust “Felicia Score” relative to the love returns you get from A and B as well.

So if A’s 20 units yield 20 perceived units and B’s 70 units yield 10 units, your average Pippo score would be:

A 20/20 = 1, B = 10/70 = 0.7 + C’s 0.8 (as calculated earlier) divided by 3 subjects yielding a average of 83%. Break even point is of course, 100%. So you might re-evaluate your strategy to allocate more resources on C for example.

So to be a normal person, I determined that you have to be loved 200 units assuming you use up all your 100 units of love. Anything below would be signs of an introvert, or.. someone hated and disliked. Anything too high, and you might be in potential danger. Not now, but perhaps when one day, the people close to you abandon you.

Now, this analysis must be carried out independently by an audit firm like KPMG, PWC or L&D (lukas and darrel) or Y&W (Yap and Wilson). The subjects involved must be mutual friends, so an independent auditing can be done, negating the bias in opinion when you are in love.

Yupp, that’s it for this morning. Its 8am, time to hit the gym before pushing for my DMM exam, which of course, involves Statistical Analysis which is why I wrote this. kthxbie.

The Advertures of Lukas Foo: The Good Samaritan

June 4th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

Before our special presentation, philipkhor.com would like to say a few words:

1. OMG, auto-tune is the shit. that’s what made britney spears sound so good. now that this technology is widely available to the public, its like.. wtf, you don’t have to sing good. auto tune … levels the playing ground. no wonder, people on american idol had to sing their heart out, yet get so little respect.

2. we are all good at one thing or another. Aidan is super good at guitar. Lukas drives like a F1 racer, fast, and safe. I like to think I’m half decent in badminton and web development.

You don’t have to be good at EVERYTHING. Specialise.

3. Rift. Sexy word. I know how to play the rift to Planet Shakers, All the Praise. Giler.. and also the truth about the guitarist who rifts.. he is very talented.

4. Kathryn Ho can play badminton AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL. Bravo.

5. Twitter is super powerful. Its like an ad-hoc IRC chat room, with the power and sophistication of e-mail, with short addresses / nicknames, hash-tagging which allows you to keep track of a developing topic. It is wonderful. Now we need it to be localised. Like Microsoft Exchange server. The mobile integration is superb.

6. Its Friday tomorrow. That means BOWLING DAY! Wootzah!

7. Praise Jesus for such an interesting half year of 2009. I learnt more than I did for the past 3 years, in all aspects of life, love and relationships.  And most importantly, emotions, and BUSINESS.

Ok, here are the Yooooooo Tube videos. At me on twitter @thepippo

Can you REALLY tell the difference?

June 2nd, 2009  |  Published in Blog

A friend recently told me, that for Rock music, 192kbit MP3 really sucks badly. And 320kbit “barely” cuts it.

I was extremely surprised. Most of my collection are ripped at 128 or 160kbit and I find them “awesome” on my Altec Lancing 221.

One component that influences sound quality is of course, Speakers. There’s a huge difference comparing a RM 100 and RM 1000 speakers. But will you get the same exponential “jump” once you touch the 6 figure mark like some audiophiles do?

Another thing is sound card and cables. Modern computer motherboards have decent onboard sound. So if your speakers are under RM 300 just stick with onboard. If you’re going professional, or doing recording (podcast for example), then you should get a better card, perhaps a Condenser Mic (yup, i’m considering this one).

Just for kicks, I ripped Track 14 of Planet Shakers – Beautiful Savior (2008) from Lukas CD :P Thanks bro…. “Nothing is Impossible” (a swipe at Adidas tagline!!)

Nothing is Impossible (Apple Lossless .m4a 43.2 MB)

Nothing is Impossible (AAC 256 VBR iTunes PLUS 11.5 MB)

Nothing is Impossible (MP3 192 7.9 MB)

Nothing is Impossible (MP3 320 13.1 MB)

#casfumal updates later tonight. Hitting the gym at 6pm for Hip Hop dance *yeah!* but gonna “consult” my Excel lecturer on how to pass teh exams.

Have a nais day, peeps!

Switching Web Hosts

May 21st, 2009  |  Published in Blog

OK, I’m done with Rawanaz Hosting. I’m moving to EasyNet as we speak. So if this post doesn’t show up, then its stuck with Rawanaz. If it shows up at 4pm today, that means the guys at EasyNet are very very good at doing their job! Let the record show that the current time now is 1:50pm, just minutes away from my Advertising & Promotion tutorial.

Here’s something to read while we wait for the server to refresh!

From: Dr. Patrick Zuma

Audit Department

Africa Development Bank

TEL: +27-73-986-3114
EMAIL: patrickzuma2009@gmail.com

ATTN: Sir/Madam

I am Dr. Patrick Zuma, a senior staff of African Development Bank of South Africa {ADB}. I have an urgent and very confidential business proposal for you. An American Gold consultant/contractor with the South African Solid Gold Corporation, Mr. W. Ali. Bryant made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at (Fourteen Million Five Hundred Thousand U.S. dollars) in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the South African Solid Gold Corporation that Mr. Bryant died in a plane crash in Alaska Airlines Flight 261 On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a WILL and all attempts to trace his next of kin were fruitless.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. W Ali did not declare any next of kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$14,500,000.00 is still sitting in our Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to Laws of Republic OF SOUTH AFRICA, at the expiration of 7 (Seven) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the South African Government if nobody applies to claim the fund. Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as the next of kin / business associates to Mr. A. Bryant so that the fruits of this old man’s labour will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favor for the transfer.

A bank account in any part of the world that you will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 70% for me and 30% for you. There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the attorney and my position as a prominent senior official of ADB guarantees the successful execution and immediate conclusion of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately via the private email address and telephone number above. Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. Please send me your confidential telephone and fax numbers for easy communication. Please observe utmost confidentiality, and be rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in your country.

Awaiting your urgent reply.

You can contact me at all times.

Best Regards

DR. PATRICK ZUMA

#Man Utd Mission Accomplished

May 14th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

manunited42

mission-accomplished

Although my prediction is still abit off, (regarding United to win the Premiership by now).. we just need 1 point from 2 games. The bad news is we’re facing Arsenal. The good news is the last game would be at Hull City. We WILL be crowned in Kingston Communications Stadium. But I feel we deserve to reward the Old Trafford faithfuls by putting on a good show in the Theatre of Dreams by beating Arsenal.

Meh.

My Telephone line is fixed and I got a tone. But my Streamyx is not yet up. They need to physically “jump the port” at the box near my house. Looks like its another 1-2 days. Damn inefficient lah.

Oh, I received my MSI motherboard, socket 775, support latest Core 2 Duo and Quad Core, basic functions. Bought at RM 220, Retails now for RM 180, I sell you RM 140 best price.

On 12th, it was Teachers’ Day in Taylors UC. The response for “write a note” didn’t go out that well, so the Council had to “compromise”. I still stand by my Twitter / micro-blogging idea which can be carried out in all computer labs / laptops around campus simultaneously. That way, people are interested in technology, and it would be easy, fast, indexable, searchable and printable.

I went to Segambut for Seafood Noodle Lunch Ai Yu. From Segambut KTM station, it is about 600 metres, but it was damn hot.

Luckily we shared taxi with a lady from Melaka. I told her, “hey, its only 600m, lets walk lah!”. She said, “I cannot walk”; as if she’s lame. I walked 200 metres, and a taxi pulled up. She called me to go in. The fare was RM 3, she only offered to pay RM 1.

For the next big event, I don’t want to take part at all. I will instead be the analyst. I will look for problems throughout the organisation of the event, so that the event I’m planning in the future will go smoothly. Of course I’m not self-fish. I will publish the report on my blog of the shortcomings and what else could be done better lah.

Went to lookout point yesterday. Had Gasoline, and went to Taman Connaught Pasar Malam to meet Patrick’s “friend” :)

Today is Thursday. It is Advertising day! One of my favourite subjects; where it is relevant, and useful in business. The assignment is due Friday, so I guess no outing for me today. Pat is suppose to come meet me for breakfast at around 7am? See if he makes it.

Live long and prosper. @thepippo

Long long Tuesday

May 12th, 2009  |  Published in Blog

In 10 minutes time, I got a 10-12noon class. Then, there’s Teachers Day at Taylors University College. After that its 2-4pm with RC Ho doing Internet Commerce, followed by Gomathi Part 2, with DMM lab.

Gym at 6 with Pat and Melvyn. We’re gonna do Party Jam with Luciano.

Need time off to complete two big assignments in Networking Fundamentals as well as Advertising and Promotional Management, both due very very soon. To add salt to insult on top of injury, I got Internet Commerce assignment also due Friday. But this one is much more easier cuz I only have to search for 10 journal articles from the Interweb.

Lim kit siang is on twitter @limkitsiang . Of course, you can follow me to @thepippo

Meeting with a few people regarding 2-3 web projects, not to mention, finals in 3 weeks time. Exciting times are ahead. And also a Manchester United match later tonight (or possibly Thursday morning).

Yesterday we went to Jalan Alor for some good foods. We had stingray, pork, sambal kangkung and a forth-dish. We wanted to have durian at the street corner but the uncle wanted rm 16 per kilo. The durians were small, but we reckon 2 durians would set us back for about RM 50.

I guess they gotta put that price lah. if they sell us too cheap, then the real durian-kaki would complain and wanna pay our “student rate” as well. As Donald Trump would say, “location, location, location”.

I downloaded about 700MB over 3 hours on my Maxis 3G at home. If you follow the iPhone 3G data plans, they give you only 1000 MB per MONTH for rm 150! Crazy hor? And I swallow up all of it so fast. Now, i *think* they banned me already. I can’t seem to surf the net, so I gotta rely on the school network.

Maybe later I’ll give Maxis a call.

Actually I ported over back to Digi due to the better rates. I did it last week but still no response from them. The red tape for Mobile Number portability is simply amazing, they don’t want to steal customers easily, and of course, who would wanna lose their customers to their competitors.

Wah, the Ipoh / Perak situation is crazy man. The speaker dowan to get off the Speakers seat in the Dewan. The law in favour of the opposition with our honourable leader appealing to the courts. Its chaotic.

I think its a good time to pray for political and economical stability in our nation.

No streamyx. So I guess I will have to bug them too.

Live long and prosper.
