UK Top 40 Singles

December 14th, 2010  |  Published in Top

I’m a big fan of pop(ular) music. Here are my picks from the Top 40 list recently:

1. Happiness – Alexis Jordan. I like the buildup to the Chorus “Haaaaa… piness!” Happy songs ftw.

2. What’s My Name – Rihanna. Songs with chants are always good! “oh na na na..” Have you heard of Quicksilver’s version of “Ameno”? :)

3. Like a G6 – Far East Movement. Nuff said!

4. Hold My Hand – MJ / Akon. Is it for real? Dead man also can release record. Smells like someone wants a quick buck. Otherwise it is a decent song.

5. Firework – Katy Perry. She appeared on the Christmas episode of this season’s Family Guy. Her skit involves a bit of sexually provocative stuff. Worth watching :) Simpsons Christmas ep is good too.

6. All I want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey. It’s making a come back! Whoa.

7. Just A Dream – Nelly. My favourite artist from way back.. Hot in heerrr…. pretty good track about missing a girl.

8. Raise Your Glass – Pink. These songs are popular cuz … like the clubbing song “Shots” where everybody take shots. Yeah, the same kind of sub-genre but for the Christmas seasons :)

9. Check it Out – Will.i.am nicki Minaj – The sample is from the first video to be aired on MTV ever. So yeah, pretty significant for stats / trivia guys like Yang Wei :)

10. Written in the Stars – Tinie Tempah. The piano parts are quite epic.

The defining moment of pop songs nowadays is the hook / pre-chorus / bridge … not so much emphasis on chorus, don’t you think? And good electronic / synth beats will win any hearts!

Good songs make me smile :)

iPod stuck on replay

February 11th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

I had an iPod 30G 5th generation as a birthday gift years ago. I sold it off.

I had an iPhone 2nd generation (the one where they reduced price from $599 to $399, yes, I got it at $399). I sold it off.

Upon refletion, I wonder why I did it!

Shawty´s like a melody in my head
That I can´t keep out
Got me singin´ like
Na na na na everyday
It´s like my iPod stuck on replay replay-ay-ay-ay

This song really talks about my obsession with pop hit songs and how the digital music revolution has make me obsessed! For example, lyrics to Eminem, I hit replay on my iTunes and it goes on and on and on! Back in the CD days, it was already there but seldom used. Worst still, if on Cassette tape, to get to Track 3 would be a pain in the ass. Kinda like how Mika finds it in his video “We are Golden”

Well, Chinese New Year festivities are about to begin. KL will be once again peaceful. Imagine racing at 120 km/h in Bkt Bintang or Chow Kit area in mid day? (J/k pak polisi!!)

As for me, I’d like to clear up the mess in my room. And send in that application to Public Bank.

Google Buzz is quite nice, give it a try!

Let’s talk Music

February 4th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Do you know what my two favourite bands “The Polyphonic Spree” and “DJ Mangoo” have in common?

Have a listen:

Polyphonic Spree

Mangoo

Well, they both use play French Horn in their songs.

DJ Mangoo’s rendition is synthesized, while The Polyphonic Spree actually blows this thing! That’s not the only common denominator. I find that I really really like upbeat songs, no matter what the lyrics say, spanning across different genres and cultures.

By the end of the year, I wish to be in possession of a Korg Koassilator 2010 “noise box”. It is for those who are too lazy to learn the drum beats, the guitar rifts and the piano keys, but still want to make melodious music!

I went to Owl City’s wiki page, and he was using a Macbook Pro hooked up to some Korg devices and synths. I was .. deeply in awe! One man show producing such great music. The Postal Service is good too, with their Such Great Heights song. But I got 2 songs stuck in my head:

The Rolling Stones – Colors

Polyphonic Spree – Hanging Around

I was watching a documentary about Black Holes where astrophysicist talked about the theory of the big (the heavens and gravity) and theory of the small (atoms / energy) with totally contradicting laws.. and black holes just sits in between! There’s this one equation which the solution works out to be the summation of infinities!!!

Ok enough of geek talk. Lets have a good, good weekend ahead!!! What are you up to?

Ang moh Learn Chinese [updated]

May 2nd, 2009  |  Published in Blog

There’s lots of things buzzing over the InterWeb right now, and here are some highlights.

A. LABOUR chief Lim Swee Say has this advice for the 30,000 job seekers in Singapore: There are still jobs out there.

Well, despite there being jobs, the competition for the spot is very tough. You’re competing with ang-mohs (which I’ll get onto later) with super hebat qualifications from super overhyped universities (yes, Melbourne U, I’m talking about U). What you can do is to offer something that the company needs, and a single competitive advantage. Don’t tell the interviewer / boss that you know SQL, XML, Java, C++, Sybase, Oracle, Unix, Apache, LAMP environment, Cisco and DJ-ing. No use lah, although impressive.

Tell them, Ï designed silentscreamonline.com, a successful Malaysian rock band as well as headed the online advertising and promotional efforts of multiple college organisations and a big Petronas-subcontractor”. That is enough to sell yourself already.

B. AFTER its $40 million makeover, iconic Orchard Road is going all-out to sell its charms to Singaporeans and tourists alike.

Final exams are 8-19 June. Immediately after that, will probably visit koko (brother) in Singapore and walk-walk around. By then the iPod Touch should be available. I wonder if its cheaper there. At the same time, gotta visit the new Orchard Road, and friends such as Vineet and Jason Lim :)

Another place I wanna “visit” is Genting. But dad wouldn’t allow lah; cuz I’m a serial gambler! :P

C. Sex education remains an awkward subject for both parents and teachers in Viet Nam because of the conservative attitude towards things considered “sensitive”. Thus, adults either end up not talking about sex and relationships to youngsters or else talk down to them or are evasive.

No sex ed in Viet = no Viet wives or Gfs.

Think twice when a prostitute offers you, “Sucky sucky fai dollah [rm 18]“. Kthxbie.

D. How to get lucky with women by Skilldo [link via Asiaone]

Very useful tip to khaw Singaporean women. I hope it works globally =P

But I never trust any tips no matter what (shares trading, business proposals, 4D betting). Gotta “listen to your heart”.

E. Mc Donald’s Malaysia on Facebook – Win an iPhone with 6 months of Maxis Value80 plan. Essentially they take care of your whole iPhone experience for the minimum duration.

This is a great marketing campaign by Mc D. Buy a JesusPhone for RM 3500, get thousands of Malaysian bloggers to blog about your shitty restaurant serving food that shortens our lives. On top of that, imagine the FREE publicity they’re getting for a mere RM 3500. Blog readers are on average having more spending power than non-online savvy people. They’re also easily influenced and believe almost anything they read online even if its half truths.

Air Asia starting this blogging thing with the Wanna be a Pilot? Blog about it. I’m still bitter they didn’t call me!

F. REVVING up their machines, they burn rubber as they tear down the roads of Malaysia. These are illegal racers who occasionally duel with each other for glory.

We gotta read international media to know about the shit happening in Malaysia. We get a different perspective on the real issues going on around us. We are blessed because unlike China, the InterWeb is not censored or monitored. Instead of reading thestar.com.my or malaysiakini.com , we should look at WSJ.com or Google News which links to hundreds of overseas news agencies. Rempit FTW.

G. Swine Flu (H1N1)

We’re at level 5 now (out of 6) so its pretty serious. Anyway, according to Patrick, we should be worried cuz the virus dies at 70C. Even if we don’t die from this flu, we’ll still be kaput in 2012 (oh no, here i go again, I’m out of my medicine!)

Hong Kong kena already. I gave wrong info to the guys yesterday. Its not Najib’s admin team that kena Swine. But OBAMA’s team. My bad.

H. SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Microsoft said Thursday that a nearly-final version of its next-generation Windows 7 operating system will be publicly released on May 5.

WOOOHOOO… Salvation is here!

Goodbye, XP. File -> Delete -> C:\Windows\Vista .

The only thing that can sway me right now is that if Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is compatible with normal Intel-PCs without having to apply some leet hacks. If Apple makes its OS available, Windows would have to do something radicle. But at the moment, I feel MS will still have its slender lead (ok, a big one lah) but Apple will be chipping off their market share.

I. http://digg.com/d1q0Gu Obama Ruins Black Jokes

I’m a big fan of Jon Steward. His jokes are very funny. He works with a team of jokers (literally) and a creative video team. Worth watching la.

J. http://mcdonalds.com.my

Ok, I did say Mc Donald’s is bad. But as college students with our Catan withdrawal symtoms we have no other choice but to buy a “small Coke” at RM 2.10 with Unlimited Refills and sit at their air-cond restaurants with big TV and watch our football matches. YW: There are downloadable coupons there, so you might wanna try them out.

Ok, you win, Mc Donalds.
