It’s cheaper to sin now!

August 24th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

You gotta make the people happy. If not you’ll lose votes in the next elections! So what if you issued hundreds of millions of Ringgit worth of summons, but people (offenders) never pay up!

Here’s the list.

KADAR KOMPAUN BARU SAMAN TRAFIK

I know a few answers, but I’d like to ask the questions:

How do you pay for your sins?

If you do wrong, you deserve punishment right? Should you be reincarnated to a lesser being (rat, mouse, oink oink) or slave in the next life? Should you be barbequed in hell? If so, for how long? How about a mental sin, is it a sin? Some say the bible has over 700 laws and rules. Have you kept every single one of them?

On a brighter note…

This week I should have time for gym as I’m not on duty at church. Maybe take the KLIA express train on a joyride, or cycling at Cahaya at night? Meh, nice dinner will do, right? :) My video render failed twice. I came back to office on Saturday especially for this project. Monday burn a copy, it sucked. So I re-render it. Tuesday, hard disk full. Like 10MB of space left on the laptop. Hai~ Now 10:45am at 6% done, prolly ready tomorrow! Limitations of hardware, of resources, time, is really a true test of how strong you are!

Lesson: BAD camera angles can make you looking like a fool with your pants on the ground!

Have a good week, everyone!

Malaysia’s Merdeka (Independence) Day

August 23rd, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Australia Election 2010

As we sit and laugh at the Aussies down under, and their problems with a HUNG parliament, one have to look at ourselves in general. Whilst unifying efforts are rampant and immense, Malaysia is still suffering; and badly!

Random Song Popping in my iToons

Enrique Igloo’s song, “I like it” has elements on Boney M – Ma ma ma baker (Lady Gaga – Poker face), the beat and tempo of the 90s hit songs that we all know and love. The marriage with Pitbull makes it relevant to the clubbing scene as well as the kids of today!  I like, I like!

Roaming Charges

A friend just came back from UK and kena Maxis’ wrath – RM 8.50 for a second’s failed call, or a RM 40+ charge for 3 min call to Singapore.

What is there to learn from this experience? Nothing. The internet will kill “traditional telcos” and their extortion of roaming charges. I was also discussing with a friend about cool smartphones without smart plans. Essentially, this was a problem 2-3 years ago, where phones were awesome and great, but no one wanted to pay RM 80-100 for a data plan.

Marketing 102

The conclusion is that, with A&P being the epitome of Marketing activities, the uptake rate of mobile broadband is immense. What would be the next big app that will convince the late comers and laggards to unlimited freedom, I wonder? I was thinking Augmented Reality apps using Camera and GPS and magnetometer to provide information of where you are.

Patience

Well, over weekend, I set a video to render at 576i. That specification is the dimensions of a DVD. I compiled a 54 minute visual presentation for distribution at the Maybank Investment Banks branches. Burn to DVD, looks stretched. Mind you, if 3 minutes of footage takes 1 hour to render, how long must I wait for a 54 minute compilation? Ahh.. memories of April 2010 haunting me again. Where I spent 2 weeks fixing something that can be done in 2 days!

Perseverance

Actually I believe more in keeping calm. Having a plan in your head, each and every minute detail being addressed is very important to avoid cock ups. For one, we gotta have faith in what we do. Things might go wrong; but at least we know what to do when it goes wrong. (And it usually does)

It is disheartening. But thanks to P1, I got an internet enabled device to use, this MSI U135 wimax netbook. 5 hours battery life, connectivity instantly when you open up the lid, bright display and a responsive system. The one feature I especially like is the “chiclet keyboard”. It is raised up, and every keystroke is felt with a little click. Firm, solid & “type without looking” is possible!

Paperplane Pursuit

They’re number 1 again on Campur Chart on FlyFM. They’re on a few Malay charts too. It’s nice to see your friends succeed. Their songs are quite decent too.

I’m guessing a Merdeka launch for their music video, Goodbye.

Can’t wait for “Forward” the studio version!

Steal Kill

I worked with a bunch of clowns a long time ago. They had great vision, big plans but no direction and action plan. One of the worst brags I’ve heard was this:

“I designed the [insert luxury car company's name] advertisement billboard”

“That’s impressive”, I said.

“Then you must be familiar with Adobe Photoshop and Quark XPress or Pagemaker”, I asked.

“Err.. no. I know what looks good or not. I just know whether a billboard is nice or not. I was a consultant. The graphic designer worked under me. He show me the designs I tell him to make the changes.”

I “high” for a while there.

Stealing credits for someone else’s work is nothing new. Many months has elapsed since this incident. But the absurdness is still fresh in my head. Might as well claim I designed the Space Shuttle or something!

Sigh!

Merdeka – Independence Day is on 31st August. This year it is Tuesday. So, who’s taking Monday off?

Instincts. Or divine intervention?

August 12th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

The rules at my workplace is to notify the boss 1 week in advance in order to take leave.

I did it twice already; with less than 24 hours notice! The line: “Can I take leave tomorrow?” is usually met with a really long stare and a surprised look! Not that the “emergency leave” wasn’t approve, it is just nice lah, to give people notice.

So 7 days ago, I applied for Friday the 13th leave. Initial plan was Penang, but realistically, I have tonnes of household chores to complete. We’ll just go Bukit Cahaya cycling, Subang SS15 pork mee and a nice lazy afternoon chilling.

The 4-of-us played Left 4 Dead. It was a map with a theme married from the first and second episodes. New challenges are always exciting. In the end, we played that full 3 hours. Quite unusual for “fully grown adults”, not high school kids, mind you. It was ok lah.

Before that we had Ninja Joe at Tropicana City mall. Quite pricey, and the only selling point is the fact that it is pork burger! A nice warm meal of Bak Kut Teh would have warmed our hearts better! haha..

Tonight there will be Dew Crew rehearsals. During both Saturday 5pm and Sunday 10am celebrations at DUMC, I will be playing with one of the cameras :) Ahh, finally the 4 weeks of probation pays off. Now comes the tricky part: remembering the names of my team mates! I suck at remembering names of people I just met. I referred to a girl Jenifer as Felicia, and it kept reccurring to me!! I can talk for hours, and suddenly ask. “Eh, what’s your name ah?”

OSK investment challenge on Monday. Will be there at the launching ceremony and our company will be providing video support for the challenge. Exciting times ahead, working with new people; in church and in work!

Random A-Z

July 20th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Tuesday is here. Lots has happened this July 2010. Since I’m out of topic to write about, let’s do a round of the alphabets.

A – Apple gave press conference last Friday in Cupertino with regard to their iPhone antennae-gate. In summary, all smartphones have weakspots. In his presentation, he showed videos of Blackberry, Android, WinMo having blackout issues. It’s all about how honest the bars are at reporting the real signal strength. The whole antennae-gate issue is highly exaggerated.

B – Bukit Bintang. Had a fun night out at Bukit Bintang shopping area. Walked to Sg. Wang, Lot 10 and the Celebrity Fitness gym at Lot 10 is like a Zen garden. Awsm experience.

C- Chinese food at Lot 10 food court is super awesome. For about RM 10, you get yourself premium hawker food at hotel standards! Worth a try if you are in the area.

Some Statistics

July 8th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

I pride on efficiency and good time management.

1. Taman Bahagia LRT to Dang Wangi LRT (11 stops) 25 min 30 sec
2. Dang Wangi LRT to Menara Hap Seng, Jln P Ramlee 15 min 33 sec
3. Menara Hap Seng to booting the Mac 6 min 38 sec
Total time: 47 min 30 sec.

This exclude the bus wait from home to the LRT station and waiting time there. Some variables cannot be changed, but efficiency can be improved with well planned journeys.

Ever so often, I see myself spending over 90 minutes to reach office. The unpredictability of the RapidKL T626 busses makes planning difficult. Of course I can compromise my journey with the U88 or the Metro Bus 99 and reach Asia Jaya instead.

Oh my Gosh! 15,000 visits

July 5th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Ladies and gentlement, thanks to you, by Saturday 10th July 2010, my blog’s counter would have hit “15,000 unique visits”. Congratulations to myself!

Now, many would argue about the metrics and sample calculations methodology of this counter. But as the scientists and web geeks are figuring out new methods to find how many real pairs of unique eyes have visited my site, we’ll just have to settle for metrics like uniques, and hits (usually a bigger number).

Commitment

June 14th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

Being “half committed”

Often times, we find ourselves not willing to be fully committed. On the bus for example, while others queue “aimlessly” for many minutes, I would arrogantly sit on the bench, smiling at them (at their foolishness), and time my “jog” to the door of the bus to perfection. I waste no time, make my payment, and usually find a seat. I’m not exactly sure how my fellow bus-mates feel, but I feel that I have wasted no one’s time; just I’m being more efficient.

Week of 7th June

June 11th, 2010  |  Published in Blog

To sum it up in one word: UNEVENTFUL.

Other than the nice meal and drive to Telok Gong with my family last Sunday.

It was a normal week at the office, with the boss from Singapore coming over to check up on things. I got that warm fuzzy feeling having a meaningful conversation with him. One trait a leader must have is to inspire his followers in making them feel needed in the company; that’s what Mark successfully did on Tuesday.

Orchestrated Tests

June 2nd, 2010  |  Published in Blog

With all the hoo-hah going on about the Flotilla activists, one can only wonder whether this is an orchestrated litmus test by the Israeli commandos. Think about it. Before starting a global scale war, you definitely wanna know who is on your side and who can you rely on.

Whose fault is it?

Last Sunday, at the Turkish Grand Prix in Turkey, the two red bull cars clashed when they were comfortably leading 1-2.

Here’s the rare moment of stupidity.
